The Associated Press Wire Carried an Article on August 21, 2002

Compiled by AP researchers Justin Glanville, Julie Reed, Rhonda Shafner. "Related major developments in the year since the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks," which included a timeline for the day of September 11th, 2001, "Chronology of some key events in U.S. relations with Islamic groups and with Osama bin Laden before Sept. 11, 2001, and of the Sept. 11 attacks and aftermath," which is only available online in an obscure reference at archive.org

This effort by the AP contains distinct differences from the "two flashes, 25 APNewsAlerts and 18 bulletins in the first day" that the AP claims constituted its total breaking news output on September 11th, which was posted to the web in a timeline pdf page, Associated Press, 2001, but according to archive.org not until March 8, 2008.

For instance, it does mention the "Empty 47-story Seven World Trade Center collapses" at 5:25 p.m, which would have made for a good third AP flash on 9/11.

The closing of bridges and tunnels into Manhattan is given at 9:21am instead of at 9:36am for what it's worth.

The FAA is given lots of extra attention, with three separate increments just to shut down the air space.

The FAA also specifically notifies NORAD three separate times of plane hijackings (but somehow Flight 93 never makes the cut.)

That, plus the four take-offs and the four crashes are timelined, although both Flights 93 and 77 are given gentle (approx.) crash times of 9:40am and 10:07am.

Instead of an "Explosion hits another building near World Trade Center" at 10:00am, we get a "South tower of World Trade Center collapses" coming not a moment too soon at 9:59am.

Supposedly, New York's mayor orders an evacuation of lower Manhattan at 11:00am, and I've never seen that before or since on any of the other timelines.

Likewise, the "Navy dispatches missile destroyers to New York, Washington," from 2:55pm is news to me, never having appeared before to my knowledge, although several other items relating to military deployments were issued.

More tangle to the web weave, I say.
